PUMPKIN (Aug. '84) has passed away, but we also share some information about her since she was our first female Golden and we thought you would enjoy knowing about her & some of her characteristics.
For those of you ‘old enough to remember’ the famous Tom Jones song, “She’s A Lady” – the lyrics describing this special ‘woman’ also characterize our ‘Pumpkin’ well. ‘She had style, she had grace, the kind you’d like to flaunt…’ - Pumpkin was, indeed, ‘A Lady!!’
Pumpkin carried her head with a ‘dignified flair’, which accompanied her eloquent, yet steadfast stance. Her love of people, especially children was seen in her kind, gentle & affectionate responses – Warm eyes & inviting smile – (Yes – Many Goldens SMILE!!)
Pumpkin was named for her rich deep coloring, yet her body structure was sleek, yet strong. She was an excellent mother to her puppies & passed on her gentle temperament to her offspring.
Pumpkin was not too “refined”, however, to miss opportunities for fun & adventure with the other members of our growing kennel clan! Her playful escapades were enjoyed very much by our family & friends. When least expected, we would be surprisingly be awakened late in the night to sounds of Pumpkin’s voice as she responded back with exuberance to the “Call of the Wild” from the packs of scruffy coyotes from the hundreds of acres of forestland that would come down into the borders of our property to ‘interact’ with our Goldens.
Sometimes Pumpkin would join in their long elaborate serenades, encouraging our other Goldens to participate in the concert. It often resounded into a competition between the “wild” Coyotes & the ‘domesticated’ Goldens, as to who could carry & hold the most peculiar sounding note combinations & for the longest period of time!!!
Our thoughts often return to Pumpkin & many of our ‘first’ Goldens, as some of our current Goldens grace us with their howling “songs” back & forth with the new packs of coyotes that still gather in the later hours of the night in the woods behind our log home.
I can imagine, as I watch many of our Goldens sleeping, that their dreams must include many exciting adventures with the wild coyote packs that continue to make their home in this lovely area of Northeast Connecticut in which we live. If she were still with us, Pumpkin would surely be the most gentle, but classiest one among them frolicking & exploring the countryside!!!
She had such a sweet nature. She was extremely obedient & a pleasure to have in the home.
